Tasting Notes
Northern Margaret River has the climate and granitic soils to produce well balanced, savoury Shiraz wines. I enjoy working with this small patch of Shiraz in the warmer Northern region which can produce fantastic big red fruit flavours in good vintages such as 2012?
Vintage Conditions
In 2012 we experienced a damp spring followed by a warm spring and summer. This enabled the growth of healthy canopies that fully ripened the low cropping grapes, producing characteristic fruit with ripe tannins.
Vineyard
The two hectare vineyard was planted in the late 1980s on north facing granitic soils. The vines were planted on the standard 4 metre x 1.8 metre planting that has now grown big mature vines that produce fully flavoured fruit.
Winemaking Notes
The grapes were harvested at full ripeness and cool fermented in small fermenters with a specific Shiraz yeast. Post fermentation the wine was run directly to oak for a malo-lactic fermentation with oak specially selected to respect the Shiraz fruit flavours. After 18 months in oak, the wine was bottled in September 2013.
